The Fort Lee Police Department has received a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to fund the "Walk Safe Fort Lee 2005" which will begin in January. The grant will aid us in continuing our efforts to reduce the number of pedestrian related crashes in the borough. The "Walk Safe Fort Lee" program was first initiated in January of 2001 with a goal of reducing pedestrian related crashes. Through diligent enforcement and public awareness presentations by Fort Lee Police Officers, that goal was met and exceeded. In 2000, there were 58 documented crashes involving pedestrians. The number of pedestrian crashes was reduced to 30 in 2001.
The police department is continuing these efforts to further reduce crashes with the "Walk Safe Fort Lee 2005" program. Officers will be targeting high crash locations and issuing summonses to motorists who commit moving violations. In addition, pedestrians whose actions violate the law and contribute to accidents, will be issued summonses.
Along with enforcement, the program includes 10 pedestrian safety seminars that will target high-risk groups for pedestrian related crashes.
